Alberta Parks has updated its policies to allow pedal-assist e-bikes on designated cycling trails within various parks. This change follows the successful conclusion of a pilot project in the Kananaskis Region.
Location and Policy Changes
-
Kananaskis Region: The pilot project in the Kananaskis Region has concluded, and pedal-assist e-bikes are now permitted on all designated pathways and trails where cycling is allowed.
-
Banff National Park: Pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted on specific trails such as Banff Legacy Trail, Fenland Trail, and Sundance Trail, among others.
Types of Roads and Vehicles
-
Roads Allowed for Cycling: E-bikes are allowed on trails such as Badger Bowl, Bearspaw, Bobcat, Boundary Ridge, and many more in the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, West Bragg Creek Provincial Recreation Area, and Bow Valley Provincial Park.
-
Type of Vehicle: Only pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted. These are defined as non-throttled electric-powered bicycles that provide up to 500 Watts of continuous max output and stop assisting when pedaling stops or 32 km/h is reached.
Riding Rules
-
Rules of the Road: E-bike riders must follow the same rules as regular cyclists, including staying on designated trails, using bells/horns, obeying posted speed limits, and following passing etiquette.
-
Prohibited Areas: E-bikes are still prohibited on trails and pathways in other Alberta Parks outside the designated areas.
This policy shift is a fantastic opportunity for residents and visitors to explore Alberta’s beautiful parks with the added convenience of e-bikes. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride along the Bow River Loop or a more challenging trail like Braggin Rights, there’s something for everyone.
Have you tried any of the designated trails with your e-bike? Share your experiences and tips for fellow riders!
