E-bike And E-motorcycle Regulations Updates in Ventura County

We’ve got some important updates from Ventura County regarding e-bike and e-motorcycle regulations.

Key E-bike Regulations:

  1. DUI Laws Apply: Riding an e-bike under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and considered a misdemeanor. Stay sober when riding!

  2. Road Positioning: When on the road, stick to the right-hand side as much as possible. Exceptions include passing, making left turns, riding on one-way streets, or when the right side is unsafe or closed. Ignoring this is an infraction.

  3. Lighting Requirements:

    • Front: White light
    • Rear: Red light or reflector
    • Sides: Yellow or white reflectors on front half, white or red on rear half
    • Pedals/Shoes: White or yellow reflectors visible from front and rear
Not complying with these lighting rules is an infraction.
  4. Helmet Laws: Riders under 18 MUST wear a properly fitted and secured helmet. While not mandatory for adults, the Sheriff’s Office strongly recommends all riders wear helmets for safety.

  5. Trail Access: E-bikes are allowed on bike paths and trails, unlike e-motorcycles which are restricted to roads only.

E-bike vs. E-motorcycle

E-bikes:

  • Pedal-assist or throttle-controlled, with a max speed of 20-28 mph depending on class.
  • Allowed on bike paths, trails, and roads (following traffic laws).

E-motorcycles:

  • No pedals, often more powerful, and can reach higher speeds.
  • Only permitted on roads, not on bike paths or trails.

This clarification aims to ensure safety for all trail users and preserve the intended use of local bike paths and trails.
